GMC Six Wheelers are a congenial group of people with an active interest in the GMC Motorhome. GMC Motorhomes were manufactured from 1973 to 1978.
To be a member of the club you must own a motor home, but it does not have to be a GMC.
Club History Spirit of 76
The club was first organized in May of 1976 with the first rally held in August 1976. At that rally, the club voted to hold rallies each month March thru October. The club logo was also adopted. The membership gradually increased over the years to a peak of 67 in 2001. The largest rally was held in Warsaw, IN in 1996 with 26 GMC motor homes. As the price of gas has increased and the founding generation has aged, the membership has declined. Presently the club has 32 members.
The club holds monthly rallies between May and October, usually on the third weekend of the month. Occasionally rallies are held mid-week (during the week). One or two members agree to host a rally at a location of their choosing. Members are responsible for their campground reservation and fee, fuel, etc. They may also be assessed a rally fee.
The rally usually begins with a potluck on Friday evening and often includes a potluck Saturday evening. Members contribute a dish to pass for each potluck. The meat is paid from the rally fee. The hosts prepare breakfast Saturday and Sunday mornings. Saturday dinner is at the discretion of the host/hostess.
The rally host may or may not have an outing planned for Saturdays. Many outings include visits to local attractions. Friday and Saturday evenings usually include a campfire and socializing. Rallies usually end about noon on Sunday and may or may not include a lunch.
The first meeting of the year is a dinner meeting and the last meeting in November is a business meeting for the election of officers. Events usually are not held between December and March.
At the present time, membership in the Six Wheelers is $10 per year. In addition, members must belong to Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA). They may also choose to belong to other clubs. Membership in GMC International, although not required, is beneficial because of the technical information received quarterly.
Pets are welcome, but owners must adhere to campground rules, which include walking your pet in the appropriate area(s) and picking up their waste.
Membership is open to persons living within a 200-mile radius of Chicago, IL.
